At WAVES Counselling Project, we believe that high-quality counselling should be both accessible and meaningful for the people we support, and for the counsellors providing care. That’s why we’re excited to announce that applications for our next counselling placement group are now open.

Whether you are training to be a counsellor, completing placement hours, or seeking valuable real-world experience under supervision, WAVES offers a unique and supportive placement opportunity that reflects our commitment to safe, ethical, and accessible counselling.

Why Join WAVES as a Placement Counsellor?

WAVES is a multi-award-winning service with a long-standing reputation for delivering trauma-informed counselling and outreach support. Our work includes:

  • Free specialist counselling for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual abuse

  • Low-cost counselling options for individuals facing a wide range of life challenges

By joining us on placement, you become part of that work , helping people in need while developing your own professional skills in a supported environment.

What You’ll Gain

We offer placement counsellors:

Meaningful client experience

You’ll be allocated a minimum of four clients, each bringing their own experiences and stories to work through in a safe and structured way, helping you build confidence and competence.

High-quality, exclusive training

Our training programme, led by the WAVES Manager, goes beyond standard placement learning. You’ll receive specialist training that explores contemporary domestic abuse issues, diverse identities and communities, real-life case insights, and effective trauma-informed practice. This training is engaging, thought-provoking, and designed to strengthen your counselling foundation.

Regular supervision and support

WAVES provides mandatory monthly group supervision (day and evening options), facilitating reflective practice, ethical oversight, and peer learning. You’ll have opportunities to discuss challenging cases, share resources, and build confidence alongside colleagues and supervisors.

Flexible counselling formats

We offer counselling in multiple formats: face-to-face, phone, and video, so you can gain experience across different client preferences and delivery styles.

A rich variety of client backgrounds

WAVES clients come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, which means you’ll be exposed to a broad spectrum of needs and narratives, enhancing your learning as a future counsellor.

Practical Details

  • Placement applications go live on 5th January 2026 and close January 31st 2026.

  • Training is in person and operates in structured blocks, with attendance required for all training days

  • Supervision commitments run monthly throughout the placement

  • Applicants should be prepared to work with a minimum client caseload of four and complete necessary placement paperwork and professional requirements

  • Candidates must complete WAVES training before placement confirmation.

Be Part of Something That Matters

At WAVES, we know the value of accessible counselling, not just for those who receive it, but for those who provide it. Our placement programme is built on the belief that practical experience, supported by quality training and supervision, nurtures confident, competent, and compassionate counsellors.

If you’re passionate about working with survivors and clients from all walks of life and needs, expanding your clinical skills, and contributing to a service dedicated to reducing barriers to support, we’d love to hear from you.
